The Avelite plates come from the shells of the Crawlers that sleep in the Highlands as boulders. Faced with them, a shield does more than block: when it stops a strong hit, from 3 damage up, it steadies you for about one and a half seconds so you are not thrown back.
Four Avelite Carapace Fragments, two Keldite Ingots and a shield make one, with 504 durability. It shines against hard hitters like the Colossus Remnant or the Magma Brute, where being knocked back is often worse than the damage. An axe still disables it for 5 seconds, as with a vanilla shield.
