Walk the Highlands long enough and one of the boulders may turn out to be breathing. When no one has been near for a while, the Avelite Crawler pulls in its legs, lowers its head and lets its veins go dark. Movement nearby, a hit or a storm wakes it: the veins start to glow, stone grinds on stone, and the rock rises on four heavy legs.

It is not hungry for you, only for stone. It grazes on Pale Stone and Avelite, which heals it, and now and then it sheds a carapace fragment. Attack it and it warns you once with a deep sound, then answers with a stamp of its forefoot or a resonance pulse that throws you back.

Its plated back is hard to hurt. Arrows and blows from behind or above do much less, so face it from the front, where it is most exposed, and keep moving.
